Full Range of Silanes

Dow Corning offers a full range of silanes including organosilanes and chlorosilanes for applications such as adhesion promotion, crosslinking agents, coupling agents, and hydrophobing.


RnSi(OR)4-n is the basic structure of organosilanes with "R" being an alkyl, aryl, or organofunctional group and "OR" being a methoxy, ethoxy, or acetoxy group.

The primary applications of Dow Corning organosilanes are:


  • Adhesion promoter, coupling agent, and resin additive
  • Improves chemical bonding of resins to inorganic fillers and reinforcing materials
  • Used for epoxies, phenolics, melamines, nylons, PVC, acrylics, polyolefins, polyurethanes, and nitrile rubbers
  • Surface pretreatment of fillers and reinforcers

Vinyl Silane

  • Coupling agent, crosslinking agent
  • Used for sulfur and peroxide cured rubber, polyester, polyolefins, styrenics, and acrylics
  • Used to copolymerize with ethylene for moisture induced coupling of polyethylene
  • Used to graft to polyethylene for moisture induced coupling
  • Surface treatment (pre- or in-situ) of mineral fillers in plastics

Epoxy Silane

  • Adhesion promoter for epoxies, urethanes, and acrylics
  • Surface treatment for fillers and reinforcers

Methacryl Silanes

  • Adhesion promoter and coupling agent
  • Used for free-radical, crosslinked polyester, rubber, poly(olefins), styrenics, and acrylics
  • Used to couple fillers or fiberglass to resins
  • Moisture crosslinking of acrylics


  • Used as coupling agent for inorganic fillers in sulfur vulcanized rubber mixtures


  • Hydrophobic surface treatment of fillers and inorganic surfaces
  • Silicone synthesis

Phenyl Silane

  • Hydrophobic surface treatment
  • Hydrophobic additive to other silane coupling agents
  • Thermal stability additive to other silanes
  • Synthesis of silanes and siloxanes


RnHmSiCl4-n-m is the basic structure of chlorosilane with "R" being an alkyl, aryl, or olefinic group.

The primary applications of Dow Corning chlorosilane are:

  • Synthesis of silanes and siloxanes
  • Protecting agents for intermediates in pharmaceutical syntheses (methylchlorosilanes)

There are eight main chlorosilanes:

  • Dimethyldichlorosilane
  • Methyldichlorosilane
  • Methyltrichlorosilane
  • Phenyltrichlorosilane
  • Trichlorosilane
  • Trimethylchlorosilane
  • Silicon tetrachloride
  • Vinyltrichlorosilane
